Buyer beware

I got my $100 rebate card from Verizon for buying a new phone. Unfortunately, Verizon has partnered with Citibank, which is a huge mistake. Citibank is presently infested with fraud. This was confirmed to me by an operator at their fraud department. Why did I have to call their fraud department? When I went to use my $100 rebate card on Jan 17, I was told that it was not working. When I called Citibank, I was told that my card was used at a Korean restaurant in Los Angeles California for $99.95. I was told that I had 5 cents left on my card. This is pretty amazing since I live in New Jersey. I am presently waiting for Citibank to e mail me a fraud form (which at this time is late in getting to me), I have to have it notarized and sent back for them to evaluate my claim. This, I was told will take 30-45 days and then who knows if they will decide to give me my $100. Verizon has been very nice on the phone but pretty much have told me that it is in Citibank's hands. What Verizon has to do is evaluate their partnership with Citibank. For those of you who have Citibank credit cards, I think you should also rethink that.

Wow if this is true I am very sorry....That really stinks.  I know that the rebate thing is a big issue for us i forgot to mail ours in last time and that was 100.00 lost....

But for you to actually recieve the card and there be nothing on it and it be used clear across the country thats terrible.

Verizon should reimburse you somehow for this happening..It makes me very wary of purchasing a new phone with a rebate...and im not one with the best of luck either!

I would be calling citibank back and asking whats the hold up you needed this 100.00

BUt i dont see how someone spent 100 at a korean restraunt..there food is usually pretty cheap...

GOod luck in getting this resolved

eyeeyebee,

I had the same experience only my card had a $100 cash advance posted from a HSBC bank in Rochester NY. CITI gave me the bank information and I contacted them. No such transaction for my card anywhere in their system. When I told CITI that they said it was on their system as a cash advance and the bank is required to have photo id as proof of id before giving out the funds. When I asked them to talk to the bank because they had no record of it they would not. But the best part is they told me I could not file for fraud because it was a cash advance. So now I have documentation from the bank that the  transaction never happened on their end and CITI saying it did but will not talk to the bank.

Verizon so far has been no help. I am at the point of going in and canceling my 5 phones and going to ATT or Sprint since there seems to be no concern for customers from either Verizon or their partners CITI.

Sorry to be so long but it has been flipping frustrating

So how did they get the card activated before it came to your house?  I mean someone inside that does the rebates activated it and used it then mailed it out or what?  Glad I ordered my phone online so I dont' have to deal with a rebate.  Plan on doing that from now on.  I don't understand why they just can't give you the same price in store and not deal with a rebate.  Mary

Hi.  My Citibank card was mailed on Dec. 17, 2009, but I was out of town for the holidays, and did not open my mail until Jan. 4, 2009, when I was back from Christmas vacation.  When I went to use it, I couldn't.  I called Citibank, too, and asked them about the transaction.  They couldn't tell me any information, other than what I saw on my transaction screen.  The name of the "transaction"?  CAFE NAMSAN in LOS ANGELES, CA, on January 15, 2010.  I called their number and some woman answered in a foreign language.  I asked her what transactions from their restaurant post as, and she said she didn't know, then hung up on me.  This is a  bunch of crap because the amount was $77.92 cents.  I called VZW Rebate and they said I needed to have a notarized affidavit and that Citibank would resolve it in 45-60 days.  If it was valid, then they would credit the money back to my account.  The only question I have is, "How {edit} does someone use this card when I live in Portland, Oregon?"  I wasn't even in Los Angeles during that time.  And why doesn't VZW do anything about it?  It really, really irritates me off, but it's really good to know I'm not alone in this...

The Citi card rebate offer is a scam and we should have known it before buying our new phones.  My wife went to use the $50 card at a local well known restaurant and was embarrassed when she was informed that the card had $1 left on it. In tracing the transaction history of the card it seems that the card was used at a non-existent convention supply store in Las Vegas. Ironically we have only been to Vegas once several years ago and Citi acknowledged that the vendor/merchant was non-existent, a clear case of fraud. Before any money could be reinstated, however, we have to wait 45-60 days for a full investigation to take place.

This process is a scam and Verizon should be ashamed that they partnered up with someone as sleazy as Citi Bank considering their past history of credit card fraud, both in house and out.. Their shameful record of indiscretions should have steered Verizon clear of this unethical institution.  We will have to wait even more time for them to stall us before seeing our money.

Verizon should be warned that if we do not have our funds reinstated we will return their cell phones immediately, cancel our contract and deal with another more scrupulous vendor.

Has your issue been resolved as of yet?  I am dealing with the same problem.  I upgraded two of my lines this past June.  I still have not received anything in regards to my rebate.  Please forward me any advice you might have for me.  Thanks!

Did you get the rebate cards and they were empty or did you not get them at all?  I know when I have sent in for the rebate before there was a place onlihe to check the status of it I think.  Mary

Ha, can beat you on this one.  Hubby bought me a new phone for my birthday last August.  I copied all the paperwork and barcodes and such and sent in for the $100 rebate.  We received it a few months later and my husband put it in his wallet.  Needless to say, he went to pay for our dinner and 'walaa'; found out the card was DECLINED.  How embarrassing.

If you knew my husband, you would know the fight was on.  He called the number on the back of the rebate card and asked the representative why our card was declined.  After asking for the rebate card number, they found that the dollar amount was "paid on your verizon wireless bill on 'such and such date'.  We said; uhm no, no it wasn't.  They asked for our personal info (complete mailing address), my husband gave it, and the rep said "NO, that is NOT the address we have listed for you".  To make a very very long story short (six hours on the phone after insisting constantly for a manager), found out another person with the SAME NAME but different address called in a lost card and they somehow reissued one to him at his address and cancelled out our card number.  Now HOW was this possible? Yet it happened; AND in the meantime the other person received his first lost card and used it elsewhere and used our reissued card (to his address) to pay on his account.  After phone hours of them insisting we fill out fraud forms (where's the fraud? it's a Citi mistake) we followed directions and got the forms in.

Two weeks ago recieve another $100 rebate card; hubby went to use it tonight only to be embarrassed a second time.  The brand new card that came glued to their letterhead card paper stating it was available for immediate use and listed the amount for $100 was DECLINED!  So another call to Citi; thankfully after going through two reps and one manager, the situation is 'suppose to pushed through' as they actually had the notes of our previous discussion with a manager.

We'll see what happens in 7 to 10 days as we should, according to Citi, have another VALID card in our possession.  We will NEVER buy another phone except online.  I have been a loyal Verizon customer for over 20 years but am almost to the breaking point of saying never no more.
