Are certain countries unable to receive text messages?

I'm fairly new to verizon and frequently text Nicaragua. I've sent several messages but they are never recieved. And they can't send messages to our phones. Are certain companies blocked by verizon? Since I was able to send messages with my previous carrier (US Cellular).
