Phone Cannot Operate, Tech at Verizon was no help

My Samsung Fascinate will not update.  I am currently running the Android OS 2.1

 

I was patiently waiting for the Froyo update to come to my phone.  Then, I find out that gingerbread was released.  I used the fact sheet suggestions to do a manual update.  When I press "check new" nothing happens.

 

I went to the Verizon store and the tech told had no idea what I was talking out.  He didn't seem to know what I was talking about when I told him my problem.  He went in and tried to do a manual update.  He pressed "check new" several times and confirmed that nothing happens.  He handed my phone back to me and told me that he doesn't download updates on his phone, they only mess things up.  He told me not to worry about it and to have a good day.  I left the Verizon store feeling VERY frustrated!!

 

Is anyone else having this problem?  Is there a solution?

 

What benefits are there to Gingerbread?  I've already noticed that some apps that I try to download won't work because I don't have 2.2.... 

 

Can anyone please help me???

What has worked for others is to have Verizon do a reset

or  activate another smart phone on the line and than reactive the fascinate

after that you should be able to update

 

Make sure it is a smart phone or you will loose your unlimited data
