How long has this been happening? Does the screen ever come on? Just a thought, do you have a new screen protector or case on the device? Have you made sure nothing is covering the proximity sensor? Sometimes a smudge or other debris can cover it. I had a Samsung S3 that did the same thing. it was the proximity sensor.

The proximity sensor is located on the top left by the notification light, just to the left of the ear piece. If you look real close, you can see it. You can use just a dry rag, and wipe real good around that area. If there is anything covering it, it is like when you are on a call and have the phone up to your ear,it causes the screen to go off. Hope that helps.

Before I tried the sensor thing, my phone was working in normal mode all day yesterday, but in the evening some (pre-installed) apps updated and back came the black screen. I then tried the sensor cleaning, but it didn't make the black screen go away. It took Hours this morning with the battery out before I could even get it to light up, but I put in in safe mode since I Need to use my phone for work. But even in Safe Mode, it went black Again, the minute my screen went into timeout mode. Had to take battery out Again, to put it back in safe mode again. This is ridiculous, since I see online that TONS of people are having the exact same issue, with no real resolution for the problem from Samsung OR Verizon, aside from a complete factory re-set, which means I lose All of my data, etc. and I've heard even THAT won't necessarily Solve the problem! Is there ANY way to STOP this from happening??? It's so frustrating to spend so much money for a phone and in less than a year it basically useless. : (

Let's work on this some more, qwikwit. When performing these restart steps, does the red Verizon boot screen come up? http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/skp/faq/1098168

Quikwit, a blank screen will not get you far. :Let's work together to ensure you have smooth sailing. You mentioned that the phone was working smoothly for several days, until some things updated, and I have reviewed similar investigations with Samsung. In 98% of the phones that have had this similar issue, a factory data reset, removing the apps that were not factory installed, has resolved the issue. As I know that I use my phone for many things, this is never an easy thing to do and we do want you to be able to enjoy that phone. Once the factory restore is completed, it is suggested to reinstall apps at a rate of 1-2 a day. This way, when something is installed that is affecting the device software, it will be easy to trace which application is causing this. Please follow the steps here at http://spr.ly/6581B9ruR.
