how can we change the default color palette

The new use of brighter color palette is actually hurting my eyes. How can I change this orange and green and bright blue to a less intense/bright color palette. So far I have tried adjusting: screen brightness; changing wallpaper; and changed screen mode to standard, with no change to the default color ribbons.  This is to much for me. Where there any security updates that would affect my privacy and daily use if I rolled back to the previous update?

The only way that I know of is to use a Play Store launcher like Google, Apex, Nova, Solo, etc....

The color scheme is part of Google's "Material Design" remake of Android and other things. According to this review of Lollipop, "Lollipop introduces Material Design, Matias Duarte and co's new design language for the whole of Google." More from Duarte in this review; and you can search online for more yet.

Basically the color scheme is not only not going to go away or become customizable by you and me, but is going to pervade the Google-verse. Mmm, yummy.

Actually I don't mind it too much on my phone. A tablet might be another story. But color schemes are about the most subjective thing that humans produce for one another (except maybe the tastes of food), and it astounds amazes -- actually, it doesn't even surprise me that Google apparently did next to no testing on this stuff outside their own building. No color scheme, especially such a bold, bright one, is going to please (or even keep from hurting) everyone. Why not at least have themes from which we could select one with which we feel compatible?

But I am not surprised, and this is why: you and I are not Google's customers. We didn't pay Google a dime for this stuff (though we do pay Verizon and Samsung), and they could not care less what we think or what we want. We are not their customers. We are their raw material. They scoop up everything they can from our lives and sell it to their real customers, the advertisers. You no more get to choose the color scheme of your phone's OS than a potato gets to choose paper or plastic at the grocery store. In my humble opinion, of course.

I'm using Nova Prime and my G2 looks nothing like the stock UI for the most part.

I find it baffling that they've just done with their color scheme exactly what Microsoft has been getting berated about in their new Office suite...I've seen nothing but complaints about MS' complete lack of color theme options - white, light gray, & dark gray, really? I don't understand how taking customizability AWAY strikes ANY developers as a wise choice. Sigh. Just a vent...I know it's futile.
