MMS messages require a cellular connection to send/receive, they won't send/receive over wi-fi. They count against your text package, not your data plan. If you have cellular data and wi-fi both turned on, the phone should switch seamlessly, but sometimes it doesn't and, as you've learned, you sometimes have to switch wi-fi off in order for the messages to send/receive. A pain I know, but it sometimes is what it is.

well sometimes verizon has to tell that to customers before buying the phone. and sometimes they have better customer support techs to answer the question. but any time a cusotmer can walk out and use a different carrier

If your phone is still on Android 4.2.2 then try this setting.
Home screen > Settings > Wifi> Settings again > Advanced > Click box (Check for Internet service).
This will allow your phone to automatically switch between Wifi and data. Some users have found sucess with this when sendings MMS files where they don't have to manually switch off Wifi.
If you have upgraded your phone to Android 4.3 then these settings might not exist, or are layed out differently. I have not upgraded to 4.3 and probably will not as there are too many problems encountered.

Hi Emel56,
Oh my! We are so elated to have you in the Verizon Wireless family. I know sending MMS messages is important. MMS messages are sent over the Verizon Wireless Network only. I apologize that this information was not given in advance.
Thanks,

Not everyone uses mms. Maybe you should have asked before buying the phone if it was that important to you.

This was the answer to my problem!!!
I had disabled the auto switching because of the horrible Android 4.3 update. My wifi connection that is 3 feet away is a slow/weak signal so it automatically turns off and goes to 4G service. There goes my data usage!!! Until Verizon fixes this issue with the latest update of android I'll leave the auto switching off and manually turn off wifi while sending mms texts. Its better than Verizon charging me more for data that they FORCED me to use while connected to a perfectly good wifi. With auto switching turned off I have no problems (speed or connectivity) with the alleged slow/weak wifi connection.
Shame on you Verizon. Fix This ASAP!!!

Funny both my sister have the GS III and they got the 4.3 update I know because I did the updates for them. 2 months in an ZERO issues on either one. We must be on Verizon's "special customer list". I know we must be because we never get extra data added to our bills and our bills are always the correct amount. And since we know Verizon rips everyone off and since we have not been ripped off the only conclusion is we are on a special "do not rip off" list. Lucky us.
