gmail app not syncing consistently

I wake up in the morning and gmail app says clean inbox. No notification PLUS I actually launch the app and check inbox for verify it's empty.

I check my computer and actually do have an email that's been there since 1:30AM.

What's going on?

But later in the day I can do a test and am immediately notified about a new email arriving.

Gmail app ver 8.1.7.183725757

on Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge running Android ver 7.0

bustermagoo, we are so sorry to hear about the troubles you are having with your Gmail app on your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge device. We do want to make sure that this app is working correctly for you. Can you please describe how your Gmail app is notifying you to clean it's inbox? How long has this issue been happening for? Did you do anything different with your Gmail app or device prior to this happening?
