Will I have to continue making payments if my device is broken?

My Samsung S5 stopped taking a charge, and also has a cracked screen. I would like to stop using this device and replace it with a phone I already own. I have this phone on a device payment plan, so once I deactivate it and switch to the other phone, will I have to continue making payments on the S5? Or am I able to return to Verizon?

Hello proogiant,

I rely on my device every day and would be concerned too if anything were to happen to it. Our community has provided some great answers for you already. You can also pay off the remaining balance of the phone early to eliminate the monthly payments.

Is the device insured? If so, depending on the insurance plan you have, it may be covered. To answer your question about the device payment plan. Even if the device is broke you are responsible for paying the remaining balance owed on it. You can switch to a previous phone, but you will still have to make payments according to your device payment plan. You are not able to return the device to Verizon.

Thank you for your response. The device is insured, but the deductible we owe to replace the device is $150. The person who owns this broken phone has broken multiple smart-phones (no matter what protective devices we use, she manages to break them) so at this point we would prefer to switch her to a traditional flip or brick phone rather than pay the $150 for a new smart phone. I will consult with her to see which option she prefers. Again, thanks for the information.

Make her pay the deductible. Open her eyes to the financial responsibility of owning such devices.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
