Why does my texting app glitch when I use emojis?

I have noticed ever since the Nougat update (Android 7.0), my Messages (v4.0.88) app frequently malfunctions while using the Emoji icon to the right of the text entry field.

FIRST PART OF PROBLEM: TAPPING EMOJI ICON FIRST

When I enter a contact's Message thread and tap the Emoji icon first, I get any of three results:

   1) The word "English" will appear in the center of the screen

   2) If I keep tapping the Emoji icon, "English" will continue to flash and eventually my keyboard opens up

   3) Or, I get this screen:

ss1.jpg

(Huh? I thought this was already selected in Settings.) Then I have to tap the center keyboard icon to proceed. (I already had Swype selected!) And even here, tapping the Emoji icon, I get Results 1 and 2 above until the keyboard finally appears.

SECOND PART OF PROBLEM: EMOJI SMILE STAYS OPEN IN KEYBOARD

While I'm texting, if I've already entered an Emoji, the Emoji smile stays open (Emoji mode), even when going back to the keyboard. While the Emoji smile is open, and I cannot click it again to use more Emojis. Example here:

ss2.jpgss3.jpg

Screen 1:  Just tapping the Emoji icon, opening Emoji window (Emoji smile is open)

Screen 2:  Exited to keyboard; Emoji smile still open. Can no longer tap icon to see Emoji window.

To reset this message and enter more emojis, I have to back out of the Contact's thread and re-enter the pending message.

How could they possible mess up something that was working fine in the first place?

I don't want to use the Verizon Message+ app, because I like this app just fine.

Does anyone else have this issue? This is very frustrating.

If anyone knows of a fix to the Emoji icon problem detailed here, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Grundberg, the issue you have experienced is now a known common issue caused Swipe+ Dragon app itself and not the phone or network.  Since it is a third party app we are very limited in our options and troubleshooting.  The emoji issue has become so frequent that the new v3.1.2 app update is supposed to have  “Swyping tweaks and Emoji fixes.”  While customer service reps are unable to time when an update is sent out, you should receive it anytime now if you haven’t already as the newest one was first released on 05/25/17.  Fortunately there are also numerous other third party apps that our customers love to use on their S7 phones.  For more details you can visit their website here http://spr.ly/65838lFcS or contact them directly at support@nuancemobility.zendesk.com .  Thank you for all your patience.

First, what phone are you using an what messaging app are you using?

Did you try going to Settings---App Manager----(Messaging app you're using)----Clear Cache and Clear Data?

I am using the Galaxy S7, the model's own Messages app.

I will try clearing the cache and data, but I'm thinking this is a problem

with the Swype+Dragon app, not the Android build.

It could possibly be a problem with the keyboard.

Did you install Swype? Try deleting it. A good keyboard is Google's Gboard.

We certainly want you to be able to text how you want to, Grundberg.  Customizing your apps or keyboard is a great way to do that, but as with any 3rd party application, there may be incompatibilities.  I have a few questions.  What happens if you use the stock keyboard?  You can also try placing your device into Safe Mode : http://vz.to/2oFUVyi.  Safe Mode will disable 3rd party apps, so if everything is working fine, then you would need to reach out to the developer and report the issue, if it is with the keyboard specifically.  Does this also happen when you’re using the 3rd party keyboard with any other apps?  Lastly, did you check for any app updates related to your apps?  I checked the Google Play store and Swype keyboard app I pulled was recently updated and mentioned “Swyping tweaks and Emoji Fix”: http://bit.ly/2rXZ59O.

SPRMANKALEL:

I sampled the GBoard for a while, and it almost seemed like a feasible replacement. However, lack of text select, cut/copy, and paste left me disappointed. The layout is also something I would have to get used to, and I also noticed the word suggestions are present during messaging but not during Google search entry. (Is there a fix or setting for this?)

VERIZON SUPPORT:

It is very likely that the Emoji issue lies within the Swype+Dragon keyboard, not within the Messages app or even the Android build.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Swype+Dragon keyboard (confirmed v3.1.2) and set it accordingly. I will test this for a day or two to see if the issue persists.

Until then, thank you for your assistance. Smiley Happy

I have switched to iPhone so I don't use GBoard any longer. Honestly, in the 2 months I have not been using my LG V10 I have forgotten how to copy and paste.

I never took notice to word suggestions from the keyboard during Google searches. When you are on Google's site and using the search bar it shows search suggestions. Also, if you misspell a word in the search, Google will correct it.

I've tried using the Swype+Dragon keyboard with the current version; the issue still persists with the Emoji icon beside the entry field. No fix apparent.

Does anyone else have this issue presented in my original post?

Nuance seems to have an absence of a tech support E-mail. I found the most relevant E-mail form I could find and submitted the support request there with the screenshots above.

Thank you for your compliment, Luke. Smiley Happy

I believe everyone who contributes is a value to the discussion, and I believe in thorough analysis with screenshots to investigate an issue.

However, there are times when it would appear that our issue is one that nobody else has experienced. Therefore, during the process of explaining the issue, it can be daunting knowing that there's no clear answer up ahead.

This is still my favorite keyboard with every feature close at hand (including Select, Copy/Cut and Paste), but it's a pain when the Emoji icon malfunctions half the time.
