Why are photos disappearing from my device?

Recently, like within the past several weeks, photos are disappearing from my device.  I take the photo.   I preview it.  I open the Gallery and see that the photo is there.  I come back the next day and the photo is gone.  It does not show in the Gallery, does not show in the camera, and I can't find it when I browse the file system with the phone connected to my computer.  All the photos that I took in 2016 are still there.  It's just the ones that I took recently that do not seem to persist.  I am wondering whether this has something to do with an Android system update.  It may be a coincidence, but this problem started after the next to last update.  I am on the latest update.  Please help.

I was. After further experimentation, I figured out that the SD card was

corrupted. The files that had been put there before (music and pictures)

were fine, but new files would be deleted when the phone restarted. I also

discovered that a newly taken picture on the SD card could not be displayed

on my computer ... said that the fine was corrupted. I switched the camera

to save to internal memory and the camera, gallery, and Google Photos work

as expected. I guess that means I need a new SD card, yes? Thanks.
