Does the phone have to be "activated" to get the wifi mac address?

I don't believe the phone should necessarily require being active, but you will need to be able to reach the Settings area for the phone. Once there, the Wi-Fi MAC can be found here:

Thank you for responding. This is a phone that I ordered for my college kids to upgrade his old Samsung so I do not have his phone here and therefore do not want to activate it at this time. However, I was told that I did not need to activate the phone in order to send the info needed to receive his free VR Gear. Of course I could not send off for it until I received the phone. I was told all the info I would need to send for the VR would be on the receipt inclosed with the phone. And then the wifi Mac address issue came up. When I opened the phone to try to go to settings, it keeps saying,
"Sorry, we are having trouble activating your phone. Make sure you have a good signal......yada yada"
I can't go any further. I can't get to the settings at all. And he will not be home from college until AFTER the deadline to send for the free VR has come and gone.
So if anyone has any suggestions on this that would be very much appreciated.

Sorry you have run into this issue with getting to settings. Let's dig deeper into this. The main reason you are getting this message is because the other device he has is powered on more than likely. Can you supply us with a screen shot of the step it gets stuck on?

Unfortunately I am not able to provide a screenshot as I can not get past "Not able to activate at this time. Please try again". I took the phone to a verizon store and they could not get to the setting either. They told me the phone has to be activated first. SOOOOOO, I have to spend $60 in gas and 3 hrs on the road just to take my son's phone to him to activate it. (So that he has a phone) Otherwise I am going to miss the deadline in ordering his "free VR Gear". That in turn is costing ME! This has become MORE trouble than it's worth to me. However, its still free to my son. Just wished I was told about this stupid wifi mac address needed BEFORE! I specifically asked did the phone have to be activated before sending off for the VR GEAR because I knew he would not be home from college when the phone arrived.

Do you have a router at home ? If you have the phone at home try turning the phone on and get it to connect to your router on there you should be able to see what the mac address for that phone is. I have a s5 that is not activated and it shows up on my router and the software I have for the router shows me IP address and the mac address.
