Here's my report.  The person at Best Buy had no clue about what was causing the software unavailability problem.  Believe it or not, she didn't have a computer she could use to do the install using the upgrade assistant.  She suggested visiting the local VZW store.  She said I might be better off doing nothing.  So, I called the VZW Tech Coach.  At first the girl, she was just a girl, had no idea what to do.  She put my on several 1-2 minute holds, as she described them, to do some checking.  They ended up being 5-6 minute holds.  Basically, she came up with nothing.  She told me to do a soft reset, which is nothing more than restarting the phone.  She said this was different than turning the phone off and on, but couldn't explain how it was different.  Then I asked about the Software Upgrade Assistant.  She had never heard of it.  As they usually end up doing, she suggested a factory reset.  I told her I wouldn't do one and would prefer to leave the phone as it is.  I may go into the VZW company store, but I have no confidence that will lead to anything other than being assaulted with sales pitches to get a new phone, which I'm not ready to do.  I think I will try the upgrade assistant again.  How frustrating!

Unbelievable But figures their customer service has really gone down hill in recent years. One thing I got to thinking about last night was what happens if you plug your phone into the computer and do the add new hardware from the control panel. I remember when I first went to that SUA page I didn't see any popup for the program either. Apparently it did down load and the command that it wrote when setting it self up was wrong.Try and do a search in your computer for SUA. Here is where mine first sat it self up to.....

"C:\Users\Application Data\VERIZON\SUA_ar\SUA.exe".

Like I said if you do a search just for SUA it should find it. Keep us posted

I'll try the add new hardware approach.  This so frustrating.  After waiting all this time, now I can't do the Nougat install when I want to.  I'll let you know how it goes.

The saga continues.  I was successful in connection the phone and beginning the download using the SUA.  The download stopped at 66% and completely locked up the phone.  I called the Tech Coach to get the key combination to get the phone going again.  I did get it going again using the power, home, and volume down buttons.  I told the Tech Coach rep that another rep had told me earlier that with 2 GB didn't have enough internal space on the phone  to do the update.  That rep to me I needed a minimum of 5GB for the download and that was what was causing the error message about the software update being temporarily unavailable.  Keep in mind I have all the pics, videos, and apps on the card that will go on the card.  The second Tech Coach rep who was on the phone with me didn't have a clue as to how to find more files, or which files, to remove.  All she came up with was to delete apps.  I told her that even if I removed all the apps stored on the phone, that wouldn't get the space up to 5GB.  So, after I hung up, I did some 'playing' and removed enough files to get to the 10GB of available space.  Well, guess what?  That didn't take care of the update unavailable message.  So now, I'm not sure I want to try the SUA update again.  I'm considering leaving the phone the way it is.

Do you have any ideas?

I know when I would update my phone with the SUA the update would be over 2 GB but then after I got the update it would create another folder and rewrite the first one into that folder which that one would make another folder.Do you have enough room on your computer? I think all together it was about 8 Gb on my computer then the actual update going to the phone was about 2-3 GB. The cleanest and best way I found was to do the power-volume down-home. It will make a backup of your phone and should put back what was on the phone in the first place. I really hope that you get your phone working because I know what it is like not to have your phone working the way that it is supposed  to or that you paid for it to do. Once you get use to the update it is not as bad as you may think . Sorry so late getting on today but I hope you got it fixed or that at least this will help.

Thanks for your kind thoughts.  The phone is working well now.  The computer isn't the problem, the phone is.  I'm going to try the SUA method again this weekend.  Hopefully, with nearly 11GB of free space on the phone it will work.  If it doesn't I will just leave the phone the way it is.  I would rather do that than do a factory reset and spend hours putting the phone back like it was.

Have you gone into the settings and check that the update didn't change any of that. Unfortunately updates can change a lot of the settings we have on our phones. The main one is the update on wifi only in the play store.

jrh4054- Thanks for your reply; you bring up a good point about security updates not being available without moving to Nougat, but this thread just shows how much trouble users are having either getting it (like yourself) or using their phones once it's been installed. You are probably right about not being able to go back to 6.1.1 if Nougat turns out to be as bad as I've read; perhaps I was reading a thread from someone who had rooted their Edge 7. In any case, I hope you get your issue resolved and end up with a usable device. I will stay tuned here to see how it plays out.
