I want to know if it possible to send and receive texts with the data turned off? Right now I am not able to. When my phone sync's up with my home/work wifi, it starts to send and rec like crazy. I'm sure there's some setting I need to change.

Data only needs to be enabled for MMS, as SMS uses the voice stream. So, using a stock messenger, you can send a text without data, but to send a pic/video, you need mobile data. But, yes Verizon Messages+ is great for using WiFI to send MMS as it can use both wifi or Mobile Data.

With Message+ you can send texts either over data or over wifi but only if at least one of them is connected. So if you have data turned off unless you are connected to wifi the texts will not send/receive.

dibertaz - Thanks for your reply! I can't say I like the answer, but it is what it is. Would I have the same prolbem with another messaging app? What would I need to look for in an app in order to be able ot text without both data and wifi. It seem pretty silly that Verizon offers unlimitted texting but requires data to be turned on so that other programs could use it.

Sorry Snn5 is correct, it will indeed send SMS only messages without data and wifi, I was thinking about a recent trip out of the country where I was in Airplane mode with wifi on and not just data/wifi off condition. MMS messages do require data/wifi connection and SMS/MMS are both ok over wifi only.

You're right...but from a stock app standpoint
SMS only needs the cell radio on.
Stock app MMS needs the mobile data on.
Verizon Messages+ can send MMS over wifi and/or Mobile Data.

I don't quite not the difference between MMS and SMS, but does my phone do it automatically? Because sometimes I'm just texting (no pics/video) and my phone just says "sending" and never goes to send. I know my phone is with data off. Then I get home and the WiFi kicks in and my wife gets all these messages I thought she'd rec'd.

Oh boy, I wonder if this is another one of those bugs in the lollipop update for the S5. SMS is text, MMS is pic/video. The phone is supposed to auto switch. GalaxyClass did I miss this bug in the middle of all the other ones? bearone21

I don't understand why people use programs like Verizon's Message+ or Apple's iMessage. These programs use your data to send ANY type of message (SMS or MMS) and are charged against your data allowance.
If you use the default SMS program (or a replacement SMS program like Handcent) any SMS or MMS message use your unlimited text and they will not use your data plan. As for sending an MMS using default texting...it is MUCH slower because is has to break the pic/video up into small chunks to fit on the control channel, but it will go.

Vzw Messages has never shown to use data for me...none that counted against my allowance anyway.
