Should the wifi icon AND the 4G icon be on at the same time ? Smart Network Switch is disabled. Android 4.4.4.

On the S5 the 4G does symbol nor the signal strength fades out. At least with v5.0 it doesn't and I don't remember it ever doing it.
The up and down data transfer arrows however are how you are able to tell what is being used; wifi or cellular network.

When the wifi is on and the arrows are below the wifi symbol (signifying data transfer) the 4G should be faded out but still there. If the arrows are flashing under the 4G and not the wifi, check the wifi connection to ensure its "connected" and not just "saved"

the wi-fi icon shows you've turned on wi-fi but aren't connected & why you still see 4g.
