Because it seemed that past upgraders were seeing issues related to 3rd party apps not working properly, amongst other issues, the first thing that I did before starting the upgrade process was to uninstall all 3rd party apps, so that the device would be as close to a clean KitKat setup as possible.

I updated last night - it only took 20 minutes (apart from the app uninstalls) and have not had any problems.  Performance is good and no battery life issues so far.  I've been reinstalling apps one at a time, so that I can isolate any app-specific issues.  Again, nothing to report there.

So to recap, here's how I upgraded my S4:

  1. Uninstalled all 3rd party apps.
  2. Disable live wallpaper and use a static one.
  3. Installed update #1.
  4. Installed update #2 (the actual Lollipop upgrade).
  5. Installed any required updates after first Lollipop boot (in my case, Google Play asked to update).
  6. Reboot again (Google Play didn't work for me until I did this).
  7. Reinstall apps one at a time, checking for sudden spikes in battery usage or degradation of wifi performance (none so far).

Hope this helps!

Try updating Google Android WebView app, I'm experimenting with that now and it seems to be working fine, no more crashing apps! 🙂

Well, I backed up everything, did a hard reset, and when I go to install the second half of the update, it still does the same thing...What should I do now?

Just FYI - "Webview" has been the cause of some games from Goggle Play to crash. At the moment the only fix to to go into Application Manager > Webview and "Uninstall Updates". The makers of the games acknowledge the problem and are working on a fix.

I haven't done the Lollipop update as of yet so I'm just passing information along!

Since the update to 5.01 my battery life has been terrible.  I even did a factory reset and started fresh installing apps.  My battery went from fully charged to dead within 2 hours much of which was on standby.  This has happened consistently since I received the update.

@pjwalter: Go into Settings > More > Battery.  That will show you the apps/components that are consuming the most battery power.  If the worst offender is a 3rd party app, uninstall it.  Something is making a lot of data requests on your phone, I'm guessing.

Another suggestion - I use Juice Defender Plus, which I've had on my Android phones for a few years now.  The most important thing it does is to shut off your data connection when the phone is locked, and only wake it up to do data syncs at predetermined intervals (mine is set to 30 minutes).  An app like that may help you, if you can't determine the cause of your battery drain otherwise.

I have been posting here for months about the problems Lollipop caused with my Nexus 6 tablet.  It made the tablet virtually useless.  I could get no satisaction from either Asus or Google.  I also referenced the S5 community where I found many, many posts about what Lollipop did to user's phones.  I am still using Kit Kat 4.4.2.  Since last Fall, I have been postponing the NG6 and NK1 updates after reading all the issues these updates caused.

Users shouldn't have to jump through all theses hoops to recover from a system update.  Samsung and VZW should have done more research before pushing Lollipop.

Look at the attached screenshot.  Clearly there is something going wrong that the battery is around 65% and then in a matter of moments it drops down to zero.
