My son's 3 month old S5 started behaving very erratically - locking up, overheating, shutting down, shortened battery life, etc. We went to a Verizon corporate store and it was determined that the phone needed to be replaced under warranty. Yesterday we received the "replacement" phone in the mail and it consisted of a phone "front". No battery or rear cover! Why isn't the replacement phone a whole phone? I received a whole new phone when we upgraded. The battery is obviously a problem on this thing and I think it should have been replaced as well. We are reluctant to put the old battery in the new phone lest it damage the new phone. Thoughts on this?

the battery isn't part of the trade & never has been. if the battery is a problem, that's a 2nd warranty issue.
it probably would've been wise to trade the battery as a warranty item 1st to see if a new batt would fix the problem.
