It doesn't help that on the 16bg version, almost 5gb is taken up by Verizon bloatware! All carriers have bloatware, but Verizon by far has the most! Why do you keep installing crap I will never use on my phone that I can never uninstall when the phone is already hurting for memory?
Most of that 5GB missing is the OS, and touchwiz. The carrier bloatware is small relative to what you think. I believe from XDA showed the size is 500MB roughly.

It's ridiculous that a flagship phone only has 16 gigs (10 usable) of internal storage. Verizon's response (when you get a cromulent one) is that you can add a MicroSD card up to 128 gigs. That would be a reasonable suggestion if the filesystem expanded to include the SD card storage seamlessly but it doesn't. Adding an SD card is next to worthless for storing apps. Very few apps can use the SD card at all and only a small subset of that tiny number use it well. Here's GTA3's storage breakdown when it's set to use the SD card:
Total: 1.23GB
Application: 1.22GB
SD card app: 15.38MB
Data: 0.00B
SD card data: 0.00B
Gee, thanks. Moving 15.38 megabytes to the SD card really took a chunk out of 1.23 gigabytes. Got some breathing room now.
And here's Waze when installed completely to internal storage:
Total: 34.85MB
Application: 34.17MB
SD card app: 0.00B
Data: 696KB
SD card data: 0.00B
Move it to SD card:
Total: 41.95MB
Application: 8.64MB
SDD card app: 32.62MB
Data: 696KB
SD card data: 0.00B
So that's moved a much larger percentage of the app to the SD card than GTA3 but the total amount of space being taken up has increased by about 20% and it's still taking up about a quarter of its original space on internal storage.
As for iphones having larger capacities available, I'm sure Apple forces Verizon to offer all of the available sizes. Verizon would probably not carry the 32 and 64 gig versions if they had a choice.

Since everyone feels the need to reply to months old threads. Why is is none of your precious S5 phones on ANY other CARRIER IN THE USA have more than 16GB?

I don't care how old the thread is, I still think it is stupid not to release the S5 with at least 32GB internal memory. I am hanging on to my S3 for that reason as it has 32GB. So I buy a 2 year newer device and get half the storage capacity? That is backwards!

That's almost as stupid as Samsung and Verizon releasing a smartphone in the 21st century without a 32 gb version available. Regardless of how old the thread is the problem still persists. Samsung releases phones with inadequate space for people who want to use it for more than text messaging and Verizon takes up a massive amount of space with bloatware. It needs to stop!

If you want something somewhere else just leave. End of story. Or pay full retail and buy a developer edition problem solved.

1. I did not say that Verizon controls internal memory options in Samsung phones, although they probably could greatly influence it if they wanted to.
2. The developer edition of the phone is still 16 gb.
