My calendar won't give me notifications

Can anyone tell me how to get a notification when I have a calendar event?   My droid Razr Maxx game me an icon on the top when I had an event but I can't seem to get the SIII to perform the same function.  Any ideas?

Have you enabled alerts and notifications in the calendar settings?
