How do I stop the name of an unknown caller from appearing on my device?

My wife received a call from an unknown number yesterday. Instead of displaying the number or "unknown caller", the name of the caller was displayed. It happened to be that the caller's name was an extremely vulgar phrase rather than a name. How do you keep names of unknown callers from displaying on the phone (samsung S7)? Also, how does someone get their name to appear even when they are not in the contacts of the phone?

cmrich75, We know how much of a nuisance it can be to get unwanted phone calls. I regret to learn your wife received such a call to her phone. A person/business can set their caller ID to reflect a name so that it appears on the person's being called Caller ID display. This is usually done via a Share Name ID system. You can block calls from unknown callers in a few different ways. One way is to use third party apps like Mr. Number that can be found in the Play Store. Another is to use our Caller Name ID service as shown here:  https://www.verizonwireless.com/solutions-and-services/caller-name-id/. There's also our FamilyBase app which shows how to block Restricted, Unavailable and Private numbers here:  http://vz.to/1PR15qn. I hope this information will be beneficial.

cmrich75, of course, the VZW rep refers you to their caller ID apps that have fees.  There are plenty of free apps the do the same thing.  I use Hiya.

When I get calls Unknown Caller appears on my phone.   This is a new occurrence.

I want the phone to show who is calling like it used to.  What did Verizon change on my phone????
