I had a Motorola Razr M that would stay on when in its car dock. I now have an S4 and cannot find a way to have Google Maps on so I can monitor traffic as I drive. When I activate Google Maps the phone will time out and go to sleep. If I try hands free mode that does not keep the display active and If I try to use S-Voice it tells me that Google Maps is unsafe to use in hands free mode. I do not want to navigate anywhere just monitor the traffic and why would a map program be less safe than the equivalent in the navigation app?.

The way the application is programmed to only stay awake while in navigation mode. You could email the developer with your concerns.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

If you want to monitor traffic as you drive, why don't you install one of the Waze apps? They give you real-time traffic info as contributed by other app users.

The phone will still timeout and go to sleep wont it? It looks like the Samsung will only stay on with authorized S-Voice apps running. When I had my Droid, anytime it was in the mobile dock it would automatically enter mobile mode and the display would stay on which allowed any app to be run without the phone going to sleep or back into lock mode. This design does not seem mobile friendly.

Try this:
First enable Developer Options within your settings menu by doing the following...
- Go to the settings menu, and scroll down to "About phone." Tap it.
- Scroll down to the bottom again, where you see "Build number." (Your build number may vary from ours here.)
- Tap it seven (7) times.
Within Developer options, check "Stay awake" option. Now the screen will stay on whenever your phone is charging in the dock.
