The abject failure of Lollipop on Verizon is their way of getting everyone to move away from Android over to Apple's iOS. </conspiracy>

I am having most of these issues also. Never overheated before, now overheats after using phone for about 30 minutes. Battery used to last 16 hours and would be at about 20%, now lasts 8 hours and is completely dead.
Several apps will not work.
I am looking to see how to downgrade to KitKat because this is unacceptable performance.

My S5 is having all the problems mentioned in the original post except #2 and #6. Since the patch came to my phone the "contacts is no longer working" error has stopped. My next step is the factory data reset. Just before posting this reply I did the clearing of the cache. maybe that will help.
I want to use Facebook Messenger, not remove it....If I remove it and reinstall it, does that help at all?

Facebook has always been a particularly bad application especially after big software updates. The program will keep trying to sync your data and feeds, which will use more battery, which will make your phone warm and sluggish. I stopped using the apps from facebook and started just using the web browser, and got rid of messenger and everything. Phone has worked a lot better, and I won't be using the facebook apps again until facebook gets it together with development.

I have also experienced the Contacts issue, but most annoying is the fact that I have an app that just won't lead. I starts, but goes back to my home screen without doing anything. It appears as an active task but doesn't actually completely load or run.
Is there any way to back - off the updates and go back to kiitkat?

How can you tell which apps are certificate to run on a NEW OS? I can't see calling an app "rogue" if the OS itself has issues.

Here's the thing, though, is that the OS developer (google) and the device manufacturer (samsung, lg, htc, whoever) can't force the development teams to take advantage of the huge lead time they get with source code before an OS update. So it's not google's fault, it's not the manufacturer's fault, it's not the carrier's fault if the app doesn't work like it's supposed to. It's the sole responsibility of the application developer. It's not an OS issue when the OS works as designed with NO third party applications.
How can they fix it if it isn't in their purview to do so? Maybe we should just be putting the blame where it belongs...on the app developers.
