FWIW there have been some reports of this happening on Lollipop -

For me, it's always been the Kernel (Android OS) that has been sucking up battery life. I have not witnessed Avast using up much of my battery, but it's definitely something I'll look into, since my battery is still overheating and draining much too fast! The only thing that fixes it temporarily for me is a reboot.

Zudnic,

The S4 doesn't have Lollipop yet.

I'm well aware. My point was this may be a broader problem than the Verizon build of 4.4.2.

It happened to me too after the update of the software.  The update made it so that my available storage on the phone was below 15%.  When you go below 15% the battery does weird things like gets the phone really hot and it drains VERY quickly.

I removed about 200 MB of songs from the phone and the problem went away instantly.

I hope that helps.

I had the same problem described in this thread and searched repeatedly for a solution. After a phone call with verizon and then Samsung I went to best buy and had the Samsung rep re flash the rom with the update. I had hoped I could roll it back but that wasn't possible. So i was skeptical as my battery was not making it through the day and the android os was consuming the majority of the power. But the rep said the downloaded file can be corrupted in the ota update so I figured it wouldn't hurt.

That was several weeks ago and it seems to have solved the issue for me. I've had one or two occasions where the battery drain was high but for the most part I now have my old phone back and the battery is still at 50% at the end of the day (instead of dead).

so I thought I'd mention that on here in case it would work for someone else. It did NOT require a factory reset or anything like that...just took about 20 minutes.

Well, yesterday my phone got so hot while just sitting unused on my desk that I could actually smell it cooking.  As much as I hate doing a factory reset and all the working setting everything back up again afterwards, I figured it was time to do it before this damn thing burns my house down.  This morning I did a full reset. Even reformatted the SD card just for G.P.  Took me the better part of 5 hours to get everything re-installed and reconfigured and I'm still not done. I sure hope this fixes it. I'm really pretty much fed up at this point.

szurlo,

If you havee read the posts here about the NG6 update, you will see that in many, many cases the factory reset didn't fix the problems NG6 caused.  I hope it works for you.

Yes, I realize that, but at this point I'm grasping at straws. After the extreme heating episode the other day I'm afraid the phone may actually destroy itself.

Factory reset did not resolve it for me.  This morning my phone went from 100% charge to 44% in 3 hours and was hot to the touch.  Android OS, as always, was listed as the top consumer or power. Reboot, as always, fixed it. This was a great device pre-NG6.  What a shame that VZW/Google/Samsung can't (or won't) fix this.  I guess I'll resign myself to carrying a charger with me everywhere until my contract is up and I can get a new device (possibly with a different carrier.)
