Does What's App limit your texting to only use the app and only to those who have the app?

I heard that What's App will make you only able to text people who have the app and make you only able to use the app for texting.  I had someone else who has the app test this out (I don't have the app) and this seemed to not be the case but does anyone know for sure either way?

I haven't used it on Android yet but my experience on iPhone (iOS) is that it is a standalone app. I use Whats App to text other friends within the app that use Whats App. The messages only go into that application itself. I'm guessing it would be the same on Android. Not sure if this helps but thougth I'd share.

You say you don't have the app and that you had someone else test this out?

Was this other person able to successfully text your phone(without the app) from within What's App on his phone to your cellular number? Did you receive the text on your phone even though the app was not installed on your phone. If so, it seems you have answered your own question.

Also, if you did receive the text without having the app installed on your device and you responded to it, did it show up in your friend's What's App app or did it only show up in their native texting app?Smiley Happy

No the text was sent from the regular text messaging on the cell phone to my regular text messaging.  Didn't think of trying from what's app to my text messaging but don't think that would go through anyway
