2 days ago, my S4 wiped out all of my photos.

2 days ago, my S4 wiped out all of my photos.  I had it set to upload them all to the cloud, but that came disconnected (probably by the great Lollipop upgrade).  Did my photos go elsewhere or were they wiped out?   Some of the photos went to the Google cloud, but I want them on my phone.

Why are my photos being erased?

I believe some cloud services will upload and then erase the photos after upload.  I think Google Photos app does that, but you can adjust those settings.

I have had this phone for 2 years, and this is the first time this has happened, so not sure that is it.

So any ideas how to fix it?

Ideas?  Yes.  Factory reset without Google Backup.  Do not back up apps and app data.

I have seen a couple other threads discussing the S4 wiping photos.  G Photos used to have an upload and erase feature.  I no longer see that option.  Were these photos erased from internal or external storage?
