Getting back my apps on a new phone

My old phone died, so I bought a new Galaxy A10.  I was told that I could restore my backup to my Gmail account and get everything back.  I can't find out how to do that so I tried reinstalling some of my programs as that's supposed to bring back the data.  Wrong!  Not only that, I can't even get the programs I've restored to show up on the main screen.  What do I do now?

As one Tech Support person to another, I’m happy to offer all the help I can. I am also respectful of my own limits. We have no resources deep enough to access the inner workings of your current device or the past one, and we have no way to detail how to enable or disable specific Google functions. With that said, I do have a suggestion. Let’s assume that the dead phone is somehow “holding onto” the information, since it thinks it is still the active device. A longshot, but why not try the Android Device Manager website at http://spr.ly/6605GwlSR to remotely erase the dead phone, or at least remove it from eligible restore devices? To test this, you may want to also do a Factory Data Reset on the current device. This is merely a suggestion, and I have not tried this process myself, but what are your thoughts?

In order to follow the instructions you linked to, it has to be turned on, and it doesn't turn on any more.  And, I've tried the Factory Reset before, on my old phone and all it did was mess up my settings; it never helped at all.  Is there any reason to think that it will help this time, or is this just a last-ditch hope?

Thank you, JOSZEF30. Are the apps you are trying to restore account based, or are they based on the local data in your device? As for getting them to show up on the main screen, you should be able to go to the Apps screen on your phone, and hold down on a desired application to make it appear on your Home Screen.

I have no idea what you're asking.  All I know is that I've had to install the apps I was using, and that the data I had in them before isn't there.  Does that answer your questions?

You were asked if your apps saved information locally on your phone or if the info was saved in a server somewhere.

If your information was stored locally, nothing you can do since the old phone won't turn on. Most major apps keep your information in the cloud, typically the social media ones where all you need to do is login.

Don't really see what the big deal is since last I got a new phone, only apps that had lost data were game ones I never bothered reinstalling. All the apps that do matter have my info when I log into them.

I had programs on the old phone that stored data that I needed for business an medical use when I was away from home.  I had important contacts that I'm finding it hard to recover.  All of it was, I supposed, stored in my Google account as backups, and I need it back.  To me, that's a Big Deal.  If you don't think so, go "help" somebody else.  I's my data, and I need it back.

What is the make and model of your device?

I am a consumer myself so I understand how important it is to restore you data back. Especially if you use it for business and medical use. If you did store this on your Google account then you would need to contact Google as it is not our product. I can take a look to see if you had a backup with us. Please review your private messages.
