Is there a way to switch from being part of a family plan to an individual line without involving the primary account owner?

He's strict, we got in a fight, he's put my phone under ridiculous time restrictions. I'm over 18, don't want him to have that power, and have money enough to start paying my own bills. How do I go about that?

No there is no way. It's under his name and he owns it. You have to do a AOL(Assumption of Liability) if you want your own plan with that number.

Or, just create your own line of service.  Be prepared to pay a deposit.  New phone, new account, new number.

That's kind of what I figured, sadly. (Winces at the cost of the average
