We have free data usage at home .Never had problems with this before, yet Verizon shows one of our phones using .5 gigabytes of data.

The phone should have options to show the apps and their data usage.  Have you checked that?  Also, the My Verizon site should have data usage and a breakdown of what type.

...Just another VZW customer...trying to offer some assistance...

I understand your concerns with unexpected data usage. Please allow me to help.

 

First, where did you view this data usage amount for your line?

 

When you say you have free data usage at home, are you referring to Wi-Fi usage on your wireless device via your home Wi-Fi internet connection? What model phone do you have? I’d like to check some device settings as well.

That's more likely when it was reported not necessarily when it was used.
