I set up a Gmail account on my Moto X but have now decided to remove it. I get a message "Device protection features will no longer work" if I continue on with the removal. Is this a concern?

IT would be like not have an Apple ID on an iPhone.
You need to have a gmail account on the phone. All your google play purchases are linked to the gmail account.
