I got this phone because it allegedly could be used wirelessly free. It did not and I got extra charges every month also the reseption is the worst I have ever had. Verizon will not help me I am stuck with a worthless phone for 2 years. I am not happy. Warning to all, don't buy this phone.....
In these two Kin forums there are lots of posts with advice from users on how to use the phone 's WiFi feature free.
I get charged for data every month to even though i only use it at my aunts house who has wifi and i always make sure my wifi is on before i go on the net. I hate this phone too
It's not enough to just see that WiFi is turned on. You also need to make sure that the WiFi setting says, "Connected to..." your Aunt's network, and that it's not stuck on "Connecting to..." the network. It's also a good idea to check it before each use if you haven't been online for a while. If you've lost the WiFi signal (if your Aunt's house is like mine, then it may have a few dead spots), then the phone may revert to the VZW network. Also, the KIN only supports "b/g" routers. So if your Aunt has an "n" router, then it needs to be set up like a g router in order for the KIN to talk to it.
Other than that, do you use the KIN's e-mail client? If so, then make sure the e-mail refresh setting is set to "Manual", and not any fixed time interval. The e-mail app uses data as well -- it's not like text messaging.
I don't know if any of these fit your situation, but they're worth checking.
Call Verizon Customer Service and have them disable the data feature on your account. I did this almost 2 years ago without incident. I have4 of these phones on my plan and I have not been charged a minute of data since doing this.
Good Luck
