Does the jetpack show data usage in real time?

While I'm using the jetpack can I monitor the data usage in real time?  If not, how often does it refresh?

The Jetpack will tell you the most accurate information that it has access to at the time which comes back from VZW.  What you may find out is that VZW doesn't receive updates on your data usage until after a data session is complete.  Data session time stamps are visible if you sign into your VZW account and review your unbilled data usage information for the current billing cycle.  If you happen to be roaming or in an extended service area the delay can be up to 24 hours and often bunches several sessions together as one large update.  Otherwise after a session is ended it typically takes 10-15 minutes for the results to display on your Jetpack or your VZW account.

There are two ways to stop a data session.  The easiest way is to power down your Jetpack for a few seconds and reboot it.  This will give VZW a chance to cut off your current data and tally it up.  The other way to stop a data session is to stop sending data.  This is more difficult than it sounds as many users have no idea when their connected machines are chatting behind the scenes to various internet services and resources.  Eventually VZW will cut off a session after it times out or they detect no new activity.  We generally do not see natural data sessions extend longer than 24 hours.

Thus when troubleshooting it is still best to do some work and then power down the jetpack.  For confirmation wait for the VZW account to update online before powering back up the Jetpack for another session.  This will give you better control over the data usage and what VZW is reporting on at the time.
