I am encrypting entire phone using option in setting. Phone has been stuck on Verizon opening screen for 24 hours now and is very hot. Phone has 28 gigs on it, only 4 gigs free. Is it normal to take this long?

No. Sounds like something didn't encrypt well, at all, or wasn't supposed to be encrypted.
Before you encrypt your device, prepare as follows:
- Set a lock screen PIN, pattern, or password.
- Plug your device into the charger.
- Schedule an hour or more for the encryption process. If you interrupt the process, you will lose some or all of your data.
