i just purchased the Thunderbolt last night. i wasn't told to charge the phone fully before using it, so i used it right away, and charged it fully overnight. i had the phone off the charger while at work beginning at 9am and with MINIMAL usage (maybe 5 text messages, and no webbrowsing or streaming of any kind) and the phone was completely dead by 4pm. I am wondering if this is typical of the phone or if i could have harmed the phone by not charging it fully before using it initially, if i got a defective battery, or if there are apps or anything else i need to turn off in order to conserve battery. any help would be appreciated... thanks!

I've never actually charge a phone fully before playing with it and haven't noticed any bad side effects. One thing to try is to drain it all the way down until it shuts off, then charge the phone until you get a green led, power the phone off and let it charge until you get a green led again which should take 30min to 1hr. Then power on the phone and let it charge until you get the green led (~15-30min). After following that method, I went ~10.5hrs and still had 83% left on light usage with almost half of that being used by a 30min call.

the biggest thing i noticed is that if you go to manage apps and click on running apps everything you ever opened is there, even some stuff you never used. I have to do a forcestop on every app right now..
Hopefully a software update will help, and whenever the 2.3 comes it will help as well.. the next few weeks you might to make sure you have a car charger

There's a great website for info on batteries called "Battery University".
Here's a link to info about Litium-Ion batteries.
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries
I would never completely discharge a Lithum Ion battery. It's very difficult to get it to start taking a charge once it's completely dead. It's not like a metal hydride battery.
Check out the link above. Probably has more info than you ever want or need to know, but the info is there.
Good Luck,

The phone is going to cut off prior to it reaching a low enough level that would hurt the battery. The main reason to completely discharge and then recharge is to get the battery gauge properly calibrated. Aside from calibrating the battery, complete discharges should be avoided as it's hard on the battery. Granted a good number of people aren't going to keep these devices long enough to notice any negative consequences from continuous full discharges.

Yup, you are correct PJ....
I bought 2 extended batteries for my Droid X and swap them periodically. I use my X heavily so it's an unusual day that I don't have to charge at least a little. This fact worries me some as when I get a 4G phone, I've got the feeling the 4G radio uses more "juice" than the 3G one. Maybe there will be a battery breakthru before my next phone in 2012.
