Rezound Global Capabilities Incoming!

Leader

Not sure how far out a full on roll out is, but at least one person has received a new (on top of ICS) 100 MB update that appears to enable the global capabilities of the Rezound.  He has posted a couple screenshots of his phone while it was receiving the OTA update, as well as a pic of his phone in the bootloader showing the new Hboot version as well as the new radios.  He also posted up the actual files pulled from his phone (no, I can't tell you where, TOS and all that) that people more capable than I am have looked through and are saying this is real.  Won't know what other bug fixes may be incorporated until Verizon posts an official change-log but, if you have been waiting for the global capabilities to be enabled, you shouldn't be waiting much longer.  Also, this could be part of a soak test, so the official OTA may be a couple weeks out.

To recap:

Global capabilities enabled

New Hboot version

May be other bug fixes, but it isn't known if or what they may be

Not yet pushing to the masses, but should be soon

I saw this elsewhere too. Maybe it is in the beta/first wave test currently.

Hopefully there are no delays to pushing it out to the rest.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Most of the articles refer to the thread where I saw it.  The guy says he works for Verizon, but didn't know the update was coming, so I don't know that that had anything to do with it.

Yeah, I saw the same. Even downloaded the zip file. Global capability was a big fat promise made to me 3+ months ago and the main reason I bought the Rezound in the first place. I travel a lot. And since buying it, it has been little more than a brick in my luggage over 1/2 the time.

So this news sounded very very interesting to me. But I have some concerns the more I think on it:

  • Only one person received it. That is odd. That is really odd. Was it a mistake? Is VZ so unsure of it that they wanted one of their own techs to test it,,,, but not telling him about it makes that seem really farfetched too. Was VZ just testing to see/verify where they have a leak to the outside world?
  • Also seems like the people who have applied it from the download have had to jump thru differing hoops, and some ran into trouble. Perhaps because they messed with their phones before, but it doesn't give me nice warm fuzzies.
  • I called up the VZ Global folks today, and they know absolutely nothing about it. That would sure seem to say that, whatever that single OTA send was, it is not meant to actually get around or be supported. The Rezound as it sits appears to be unlocked, so if this OTA also locks it as the other global phones are, then it sure sounds like the VZ Global folks have no capability to unlock it.

Sounds very very interesting to me, but something doesn't smell right about it to me either.

The ICS update for the RAZR and Droid 4 enabled global capabilities and these phones now are (GSM-SIM) unlocked.  Not sure if a future update will change that, but there is a good chance (as reported elsewhere) that the Rezound will stay unlocked as well.

Not sure if it has the hardware to be able to do this, but VZW seems to be releasing a lot of (soon to be) global LTE phones lately.
