my droid turbo has recently started running hot

I've had it for a while, 6 or 7 months at least, so this is new.

Twice it's gotten hot enough to display an overheat warning, and once it actually shut down.

I'm pretty good with going into the task list and killing unneeded apps.
while it does get really hot running gps, it also gets to hot to be in my pocket when it is doing absolutely nothing.

Is there a fix for this?

There is some other issue going on.  Try running in safe mode for a while.  If it doesn't get hot, most likely it is an app issue and a factory reset should solve that issue.  If it it remains hot in safe mode, you might have a battery issue.

What is safe mode and how do I use it ?

You might try a simulated battery pull. While the screen is on, press the power button and hold it in. It will power down and come back on in a few seconds, then release the power button. My wife's Turbo gets hot sometimes and that takes care of it.

My Turbo gets hot even when I have disabled all programs, even those running in the background.  It gets hot enough that it is very uncomfortable to keep in my pocket.  It is, of course, not on a charger at that time.

The Verizon store tech suggested a "soft reset"--holding down the power and volume down buttons simultaneously until the phone shuts off (it will take a screen shot first, and then shut down and reboot).  This has mixed results.  Sometimes it seems to help, but most of the time it just goes back to heating up.

I have read a lot of threads about this.

I personally believe that it is time for Verizon to throw in the towel on the Droid Turbo, recall all of them, and give every customer both a new phone (upgrade) and some sort of financial compensation for the daily hassle of it all.  Maybe if enough Droid Turbo owners complain the mega corp, Verizon may respond favorable.

Thank you all for your great suggestions.
Before I got to read and try any, I started messing around, and it seems WAY better. This morning, after not being plugged in all night, it was cool and the battery had not gone down while sitting overnight.

I looked in the memory usage list for things that were running when I hadn't used them, and started deleting or diasabling. A LOT of factory apps, google and Motorola, just run for no reason. Did lots of "uninstall updates - force quit - clear cache - disable"
The biggest culprit seemed to be facebook. There I actually had to go into the apps preferences to get control of unwanted background activities, including facebook messenger and all notifications. There's actually quite a bit of control, once I found it.

Happy with my Droid Turbo again.
