It is a technical limitation of the 1G,2G, and 3G that Verizon (and Sprint) use AND only if a phone manufacturer purposely builds in 2 receivers can a phone use data and voice at the same time prior to the release of voLTE. I don't necessarily check every detail of a phone at the store, but I do research it online before purchasing.
LTE current coverage to allow voLTE really depends on your local area. I have been using voLTE exclusively since the IP6P came out. The voice quality when you do call someone else on voLTE and Advance Calling 1.0 HD voice kicks in really makes you realize how poor voice sounds on regular cellular.
Also remember the voice portion of voLTE, although data, gets it own high priority data stream and is not any where near as sensitive to usual VOIP phones calls break up and warbling, such as SKYPE and Google Voice.
The good news is the phone will eventually allow voice/data simultaneously, but not quite yet. If it is that important, the only logical choice is to return it and get a current phone that allows it.
I have a G3 and before that a Note 3.
I was shocked when I first read this, but then I realized were talking about Verizon, so stupid decisions are par for the course.
I was really thinking about buying this phone off contract, but now I will probably go with the Note 4.
I can remember back to the days of 3G when we had to envy AT&T customers and drool over what there GSM phones could do. LTE kind of leveled that playing field.
I can't believe Verizon is so short sighted to think we would not react negatively to this kind of screw up. I don't do data & voice often, but when I do, it's nice to know I can listen to beats in the car and also take a call from the wife at the same time or talk to the wife and browse the web for a good restaurant in our area.
Now that we have made our displeasure clear, Verizon should be trying to move heaven & earth to get Advanced Calling 1.0 out this handset.
They will have to do more than get VOLTE onto the Turbo. They will have to make their LTE coverage as complete and robust as the 1X service, so that VOLTE is a useful capability. Now its nice when you have coverage, but useless when LTE is weak or missing.
Remember the ads a few years back, it was all about the network, and granted it is a great overall network, but by essentially disabling 1x for voice by requiring VOLTE for Voice and data combined before the LTE buildout is as good as the 1X buildout, makes it even more about the network. if you watch the signal strength on LTE and 1X (you can use many free apps to do that) you will see how spotty the LTE coverage is, in all but very urban areas.
Just because your LTE indicator is on, doesn't mean its usable for voice as reliably as 1X. My view is very hard line on this. Voice services have to be as bullet proof as possible, and just saying we get VOLTE doesnt mean its ready for prime time in terms of the infrastructure deployment. IT took a couple of years to roll out LTE to the point where the coverage was in a high percentage of place.
If you were to make a map of the US overlaid with 1x usable signal strength in all locations, this idea will work when the usable signal strength map for VOLTE looks the same or better. Sorry its just a cold reality.
Don't get me wrong, i really want it too, but I just think it will be another year or two before its as reliable as it needs to be. Nuf said.
Not all phones have the ability to surf the web and talk on the phone at the same time. The majority of phones do not have that feature so when one does have that feature it is promoted to boost sales. It is not a 'fix' from an update it is a hardware thing, how the phone is programmed and made in the factory.
Well you have to remember it's not first and certainly not last that a company is pushing new innovations situations come along with it, when new phones came out to work on 3G and 4G there were issue not like the current one were seeing but there were issues.) I remember the Thunderbolt having a heck of time coping with 4G but once the paddle got a good spin going and the boat moved forward it ran well.. I think the same will happen with these new phones and current phones being updated to the new innovation, but sadly at the cost of few upset customers..
You just have try and cope with it the best way you can..
I previous owned the RAZR MAXX and it could do voice and data at the same time . . . I am disappointed that the Turbo doesn't do this - how can a phone with such specs overlook something so basic . . . of course, my last DROID (the RAZR MAXX) also had a slot for a micro SD card . . . yep - that Samsung Galaxy 5 is looking better every day . . . I've got less than a week to make up my mind - I'm really hoping Motorola provides an update soon.
The DROID Razr Maxx has an extra radio in it that the DROID Turbo doesn't have. The DROID Turbo doesn't have it in anticipation of using the VoLTE capabilities of the network. That's why it has to wait for a software update before it can handle voice and data simultaneously on the Verizon Wireless network. If you need that capability NOW, then get a different phone with the two radios or has Advanced Calling already.

Ultimately, this decision was extremely short sighted on Verizon's part. If the end game is voice & data through volte, then Advanced Calling 1.0 should have been available on launch day just like it was for the iPhone 6.
Now it's also interesting to find the Moto X suffers the same problem (at least with Verizon). Moto X's have a single antenna, but this is not a problem for GSM carriers as the X is not a Verizon exclusive. The Droid line is a Verizon exclusive, so they coukd have easily requested Motorola put 2 antennas in the Turbo to avoid this problem.
What really scares me is the other phone I am considering buying is the Nexus 6 (also by Motorola). Will this phone suffer the Antenna-Gate debacle on Verizon?
For me, the Turbo is out and the Nexus 6 is wait & see for Verizon's release, but ultimately I May end up with the Note 4 because I know it has two antennas.
Why is everything Verizon's fault? Why jump straight to blaming Verizon when it's the manufacturers who don't put in two antennas. It's a simple fix without the carriers having to do everything themselves. As the manufacturer of the phones the blame should fall to them. But everyone has gotten so used to blaming Verizon for everything from customers not paying their own bills to customers losing their pets. It's ridiculous people.
Here we go with this entilted crap again, it's not all about us the Verizon Customers, and it's not always Verizon's fault that something can't do what it's said it's supposed to do, maybe if you don't like the fact the phone doesn't do what is said it's supposed to do, GO TALK TO THE MANUFACTURER!! Maybe they can "fix" it for you and tear your phone apart and you can be without a phone for however long it takes to put in that second attena so you entilted customers can surf/talk and the same time since it is SOOOOOO important, we've gone this long without doing we can go longer without it and be just fine!!
