Show me how to use the new version of smart action included with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

CLICK HERE FOR VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO USE SMART ACTIONS.

BASICS

QUICK START: SMART ACTIONS

Tired of doing the same tasks over and over again? Let Smart Actions do them for you.

Smart Actions can extend battery life and keep your phone adjusted to your changing needs, based on your location, the time of day, or other factors.

The first step is to set up some simple rules. You can create the rules from scratch, or use some preset standards. Once you’ve created your rule list, your phone automatically carries out the instructions.

For example, create a Battery Extender Rule to turn off GPS when you’re not using your phone, use a Work Rule to silence ringtones when you’re at the office, or set up a Meeting Rule to send auto-reply text responses when you’re busy.

To get started, here are a few definitions:

  • Rules: Customized instructions for your phone. Rules include two parts: triggers and actions.
  • Triggers: Conditions that activate the rule (such as battery level < 35%).
  • Actions: Tasks to be performed (such as dim the touchscreen).

CREATE RULES

When you create a rule, it’s added to your rule list. Return to the rule list anytime to review, edit, disable, or delete rules.ImageTip: A quick way to go back to your rule list from anywhere in Smart Actions is to touch Image at the top left of each screen. There are three options for adding rules to your rule list:

  • Samples: Start the easy way, by selecting a standard rule.
  • Suggestions: Add a rule that was created for you, based on how you use your phone.
  • Blank Rules: Create a new rule from scratch, using a blank template to choose your own triggers and actions.

To use samples:

  1. Touch Image at the top of the rule list, then touch Samples.
  2. Touch a rule you’d like to try. When it opens, check out the triggers and actions. (This is a great way to get familiar with the options.)
  3. If you decide the rule is useful, touch Save to add it to your rule list.

To use suggested rules:Even when you don't have the app open, Smart Actions is working for you. Suggestions happen automatically—you’ll see the new suggestion notification icon Image in the status bar. Just flick the bar down to see the suggestion, then dismiss or accept it. (To disable notifications, open your rule list, then touch Menu Image > Settings > Suggestion notifications.)You can also use suggestions when creating rules within the Smart Actions app. Touch Image at the top of the rule list, then touch Suggestions. To create new rules:

  1. Touch Image at the top of the rule list, then touch Blank rule.
  2. When the template opens, touch Image to choose an icon, then type a name for the rule.Image
  3. Touch Image to select triggers, then actions. Use the trigger and action menus to explore your options.Tip: Start by choosing a trigger that you encounter often (such as Battery level dropping below 35%). Then add actions that you typically use in response (for example, lower the touchscreen Brightness, turn Wi-Fi off, disable Background sync, or display a Reminder to recharge).Note: A rule that has multiple triggers will only activate if all trigger conditions are met.
  4. When you’re done, touch Save to add the rule to your rule list.

About Manual Rules:If you haven’t set any triggers for a rule, Smart Actions creates a manual rule, which does not activate automatically. Instead, turn it on and off by touching the icon next to its name in the rule list. This is a good option if the triggers are variable or not easily defined. For example, set up a manual Driving Rule to turn off ringtones and start your favorite playlist. Then you can manually enable the rule for any drive, regardless of the location, time, or day.

EDIT RULES

You can edit any rule before saving it. To make changes later, open the rule list, and touch the name of the rule to reopen it. You should see the current triggers and actions for the rule:ImageChoose any option to edit the rule:

  • To add a new trigger or action, touch Image.
  • To edit a trigger or action, touch its name, then adjust the settings.
  • To disable a trigger or action, drag it to the right to disconnect it from the rule bar. To enable a trigger or action, drag it to the left to reconnect it to the rule bar.
  • To delete a trigger or action, touch and hold its name, then touch Delete.
  • To rename the rule or change its icon, touch Menu Image > Rename or Edit icon.

DISABLE, ENABLE & DELETE RULES

You can disable or enable a rule anytime, or completely delete it from the rule list:

  • To manually disable/enable a rule, touch the icon beside its name. (Rules that have no triggers must always be turned on/off manually.)
  • To disable all your rules, touch Menu Image > Disable all. (You’ll need to manually enable each rule that you want to use again.)
  • To delete a rule, touch and hold its name, then touch Delete.

Image

CHECK RULE STATUS

A rule is Active when it’s enabled and all the trigger conditions are met. Afterwards, the rule returns to Ready state, and the phone returns to its previous settings.

For example, ringer volume is initially set to 50%. A Work Rule becomes Active from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, setting the ringer to silent/vibrate. After 6:00 pm, the ringer reverts to 50% volume, and the rule returns to the Ready state.

To check status, open the rule list. The status of each rule is shown by its icon. Touch an icon to enable/disable the rule.

Image

Active—The rule is activated.

Image

Ready—The rule will activate automatically when all of its triggers are met.

Image

Disabled—The rule is disabled. Touch the icon to enable it.

To check the status of a rule’s triggers and actions, touch its name in the rule list to open it.

The status of each trigger and action is shown by a color indicator:

Image

Image

Blue—Trigger condition has been met, or action is active.

Image

Gray—Trigger condition has not been met, or action is either inactive or conflicts with another active action.

Image

Orange—Trigger or action has a problem. Touch the trigger/action to see more details.

Disabled triggers and actions are disconnected from the rule bar.

Image

Disabled triggers do not help determine when a rule will be activated. Disabled actions are never performed.

To re-enable a trigger or action, drag it to the left to reconnect it to the rule bar.

DISABLE NOTIFICATIONS

The status bar (at the top of the touchscreen) shows Smart Actions notifications to let you know when rules are activated, and to suggest new rules for you to try.

To disable notifications, open your rule list, then touch Menu Image > Settings > Rule status notifications orSuggestion notifications.

ADVANCED

LOCATIONS AND TIMEFRAMES

Locations and timeframes are customizable triggers. You can add, edit, and delete settings. Smart Actions saves your preferences, so it’s easy to reuse and update the information.

For example, default timeframes include Morning, Evening, and Weekend. You can select the default Morning timeframe (5:00 am to 8:00 am) to trigger a rule. Or if you’re not an early bird, edit the hours to shift them later. For locations, add a list of favorites, such as Home, Work, and Gym. If you move, enter a new Home address to instantly update all your Home-based rules.

To use locations:

Create a new rule, or open a rule from your rule list. Touch Image to open the triggers menu, then touch Locations. You can add or edit locations. Touch the checkbox for the location you want to use, then touch Done:

Image

Note: If you use a location as a trigger, Wi-Fi is required. So location triggers can’t be combined with the Wi-Fi (On/Off) or Airplane mode actions, and Wi-Fi must be turned on to use the rule.

To use timeframes:

Create a new rule, or open a rule from your rule list. Touch Image to open the triggers menu, then touchTimeframes. You can add or edit timeframes. Touch the checkbox for the timeframe you want to use, then touchDone:

Image

To update your profile:

Locations and timeframes are also stored in your profile. To update your profile, open the rule list, and touch Menu Image > My profile > Locations or Timeframes. Add, edit, or delete places and times. Changes are reflected in your rules.

SETTINGS CONTROLLED BY SMART ACTIONS

To see which of your phone settings are currently being controlled by Smart Actions, open the rule list, and touch Menu Image > Check status. The check status screen identifies which rule is controlling each setting. This information can be useful for troubleshooting rules that don’t perform as expected. Touch a setting to go to the active rule.

CONFLICTS

Conflicts can occur when multiple rules are active and their actions are programmed to change the same setting in different ways.

For example, you may have a Home Rule that sets your ringer to maximum volume, and a Sleep Rule that sets your ringer to silent from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am. When you’re home at 10:00 pm, both rules will be active, and will tell your device to do two different things to the ringer.

When such conflicts occur, the Smart Actions app follows the action of the most recently activated rule. In this example, the ringer will be silent, because the Sleep Rule became active after the Home Rule.

To avoid such conflicts, you can make your rules more specific so they don’t overlap. In this case, you can create a Home Evening Rule that’s active from 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm, and a Home Night Rule that’s active from 10:00 pm - 6:00 am. This ensures that the rules will not be active at the same time.

CONNECTIONS

If you have rules that use Location or Wi-Fi connection triggers, the rules will not activate when Location settings or Wi-Fi power are turned off.

Hey @B33 - somewhere in your Tips/Tricks why don't you include the fact that you can "stack" icons in the Favorite Tray? That is one handy feature IMO!

Task Managers let you monitor how applications use memory and processing power and identify apps that are using too many resources. Although several Task Manager applications are available on Android Market, we recommend the built-in Motorola Task Manager.

Tip #31

https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/85639/p/30,6720,8417

I can't stream any media when connected on my Wi-Fi network, but can still surf the web browser, why?

We've found that on some D-link model routers, you may need to enable a setting Multicast streams, to allow streaming for your device to work when connected to the wireless router. Please check with the manufacturer's documentation for more details.

Your settings may vary by model
