How do I up/download files from my PC using a usb connection?

Up until late November 2016, I was able to connect a USB cable from phone to PC and explore/modify phone and supplemental storage using Windows Explorer.  Now, Explorer see nothing but the phone connection, with nothing visible. Having this occur on more that one PC, it must be a phone/OS problem.

With the Marshmallow update, the default USB mode is now charging only.  Whenever you connect the phone and computer with the USB cable, you'll need to pull down the phone's notification shade, tap where it says USB for Charging, and change it to File Transfer.  See if this helps:

Thank you.

Is there anyway to change that poor default choice?
