I have my phone set to silent. It randomly buzzes throughout the day like there is some type of message. I look at the phone and there are no texts, emails, Facebook updates etc. Seems like there is nothing to be notified about but the phone continues to do that. Anybody have an idea why it happens and how to stop it? Thanks.

Check SETTINGS \ SOUNDS area, it could be that the phone is going in and out of the network, and the vibrate could be the phone letting you know it is doing just that. You can turn those off if you want.
Hope this helps.

I checked and all of those are unchecked. The phone gives a random short double vibrate even just sitting on the table. I look at there are no notices.

Do you have an app that monitors the battery or something else? If you take the phone off of silent, does it play any tone or anything?

The problem is Verizon's pre-installed bloatware, the Backup Assistant Plus. I'm trying to figure out how to kill it without <Comment deleted per the ToS.>. It's possible to turn it off, but it does not seem possible to turn off notifications from it.
Somewhere there is supposed to be a page for it.
When the backup runs, it sends a notification (oh joy) that it has done a backup. HOWEVER, it also seems to override the smartassist program that lets you program quiet time, probably because it's a Verizon app.
If you sync your stuff manually, you don't need it. If you bought the SECURITY app that Verizon tries to sell you, it's just doing the same thing. I could say more. But I won't.
MAYBE some person from Verizon will read this and respond before I complain. Oh... how did I know what caused it? I pulled down the top shade and noticed that the notification sounded at 12:42 AM, same time the app showed. It's now 2:16 AM, and I'm still working on figuring out how to make it stop permanently.

The DROID Razr Maxx HD is running Jelly Bean Android 4.1+. Go to settings > apps > slide over to the all tab > scroll down to the Backup Assistant Plus application. Select it. Uninstall the updates. Disable the app. Say Hello no more notifications and application removed from the app drawer.

Thank you Ann-
I'd done that last night before posting, but it's not a really good solution. I'd mentioned that it was possible to turn off the app, which I had already done, by force stopping, clearing the cache, and going into the setup wizard and de-selecting the backup assistant. (Otherwise it restarts on power-up).
All we all really want to do is to turn of the sound notifications for that app, which don't make much sense in the first place. There is a box which can't be unchecked, that appears to do this.
Further, this assistant is what Verizon seems to use on the PC also for managing backups. It also does some sync of calendar functions (implying that it is synching with Google Calendar) and since I disable it, I've gotten an error on my PC application, 4Team's Sync 2, which is what I use for synching Outlook to my Google calendar.
I expect to set it up again and see if I can control it from the Verizon website pages for backup assistant.

I use the Google sync to backup my calendar and other things. I choose to have no use for Verizon's backup assistance.

The BackupAssistant Plus Media has an email address field titled "Email for BUI+ account". Change that to another email address like a google.com address.
No more 4 AM notifications.
