Droid Maxx gets hot and battery runs down

My Droid Maxx gets hot and battery runs down too fast.  How do I know what is running in the background that I don't need (and shut off) that won't affect the basic phone functions?  I mostly use the device for talk, text, solitaire, and sometimes Facebook.

Hi Harley,

I checked system updates and it says my device's software is up to date.  It is Version 24.21.7.en.US.

I'm not sure if that is what you are asking.  I'll give you the info I found under "About Phone."
