I have a Droid Razr Maxx HD. It's basicly the same as yours but with a bigger battery. I have been using 4.1.2 since it was pushed out months ago and email works as it always has since I got the phone right after it was launched.
I think the Motorola rep is/was pulling your leg or is/was so new he didn't know what he was talking about. Check your email setting again or delete them off your phone and start over. It should work with 4.1.2.
