why stronger 3G signal where I have weak voice signal?

Can anyone explain some of the technical details behind why, at my house in a rural area, I have a strong 3G signal and a weak voice signal? Without knowing the relevant details behind the relevant technologies, I would have thought that it is easier to get a strong voice signal than a strong 3G signal. Could anyone (who knows more than me) explain some of the technical details behind why this is not the case in my rural area?

By the way, this came up in my attempt (apologies if it is a failed attempt, but I am only trying to help) to analyze/diagnose a related matter in this other thread here:

If anyone has a better analysis than my attempted one, please feel free to contribute to that thread. However, independent of that thread, I would be curious to hear any explanations for/answers to my questions in the first paragraph above. Just trying both to understand my phone and contribute to forum discussions on these matters.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Droid X!

It all depends on your location and the broadcast of the closest tower.

You may be getting your EVDO signal from a data-only site that is closer to your home than the voice cell.

About 2 years ago Verizon put a new cell site up about 600 yards from my house. It was data-only (EVDO).It now supports both EVDO and 1X, but for about a year we had to use a local network extender.
