If I don't get the 5.4 upgrade before September, I'm getting an IPad.  **bleep** you Verizon.

Look,

I would love to have the 2.2 update myself.  It has a few features that I want.  However, it is going to take a few months to work throught he system.  No amount of whining on this board is going to change that....

The steps are a follows:

1) Google releases the new OS version ( Completed )

2) Motorola has to test the new OS with all of it's hardware ( Probably 1-2 months )

3) Motorola sends it to Verizon.

4) Verizon test it for ( 1-2 ) months on it's wireless network and sends the information they gather back to motorola.  In this case they will probably request that they remove the Wifi Tethering.

5) Moto makes what ever changes are necessary and sends it back to Verizon.

6) Verizon test is some more and probably sends a few key over the air updates to employees for a little more testing ( probably 1-2 weeks )

7) If no major flaws pop up, Verizon starts the over the air updates. ( Flaws DID appear in the 2.1 update at this point causing a couple of weeks of delays )

7A ) Now usually somewhere around steps 6 or 7.  The Update.zip is made avaliable on the web and you can manually put it on your phone ( I did this with 2,1 at the step 7 phase )

Like it or not that is what has to happen to get the update.  2-3 months after the google release is about the best you can hope fore.  Any other speculation is simply going to cause more people to get irritated.  The constant mis-information from the click revenu gerating blogs does not help the situation much.....

In a carriers perspective can someone please tell me the benefit of rolling out a new version of an OS to your phone?

There is none unless it fixes a bug.

A phones life is generally about 1 1/2 to 2 years. Not because of the quality but because the technology and how hungry consumers are. Point made by this entries creator.... Android 2.1 just came to the Droid and since Google breathed 2.2 he/she is crapping his/her pants already in anticipation. Also think about how long contracts are... think there is a reason.... just a thought.

My bets are that he is threatening to go to iPhone primarily because OS 4.0 is rolling out in July and it is something new. New means better. And better is coming sooner. Once 2.2 rolls out on the Droid check the AT&T forums for this guy.

So back to my point. Verizon just came out with the Incredible, it also has some other rumored Android phones in the future. Why would Motorola and Verizon try to put out 2.2 on a device they aren't even focused on anymore. They want you to spend money.

Motorola doesn't want you to keep a Droid forever. And Verizon doesn't want your contract to run out.

So lets be honest, yes it will get 2.2. Yes it may even be sooner than later, but for people [to get upset] over each OS announcement is ludicrous.

Some of you people expect too much. Of course it takes a couple steps to get the 2.2 ready for each phone, and I promise they aren't in a big hurry.

{please keep your posts courteous}

i'm not familiar with any of this stuff that you all are talking about. the only thing i know about the updates is that from goin through this forum, the eris appears to have recently got the 2.1 update??? and it appears to have MESSED UP A LOT of phones??? yeah...i'd like an update as much as the next guy (although, all i know about it is that it can turn your phone into a hot spot, which i still don't believe verizon will allow?)......but not if i'm going to lose my contacts, mess up my speed dial, lose pics, tones and other date, have screen freezes, and whatever other problems that great 2.1 update caused on the eris. i like my phone now. if it could do some cool new stuff with an update, then great....but not at the expense of messin it up. most of the apps that i have been interested in, but passed on have comments that start with "was great until the update....." or "since the update i CAN'T...."

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa, @gainsville CHILL out. GeriO is cool peeps, we ❤️ and welcome him here on the Android forums, despite his vacation from the Android platform.

Which begs the question, what's wrong with having another phone and posting here? I have the iPhone because of my current situation (Android didn't have the app/functions then as it did now), and I'm probably the top contributer here on the Android section.

Your point?

Regardless, OP, if you want to give away that MotoDroid, I'm your guy.

Yeah, Gainsville would probably blow a gasket if he knew that I still post occasionally at my former carrier's forum (AT&T), although not lately.

Gainsville is cool, I don't why I was the target that day, but that's fine. I guess he agrees with the OP more than I.

The Newton I'm speaking of was an Apple product at the time, carried by Bellsouth Mobility, which turned into CIngular, which morphed into our  AT&T of today. I tried a demo Newton for a while at the time, but it was HUGE and with Star Tacs hitting the door, I couldn't justify the shoulder pain  (I was sooo happy that the brick phones went away, although you couldn't kill a brick phone if you tried).

Geri "gee, I'm old" O

:smileyvery-happy: +1, and I'd give more if I could. Made my day.

Seriously though, chill. If you're not technically savvy enough (or don't want it badly enough to void your warranty) to root your phone, then wait for the people at Motorola/Verizon to iron out the kinks for you. Getting an update sooner does NO good if it breaks your phone.
