If not using the Motorola Charger supplied in box, try that and see if it resolves the issue. After-market and non-supported chargers can be noisy which can effect the touch screen response.

Mine did the same thing for the first time today. I had it plugged in charging -- using the supplied Motorola charger but not the Motorola USB cable (since the supplied one is so **bleep** short). I was writing something with Swype, and it was behaving erratically adding crazy letters and caps and producing a squiggly line that did not represent my finger motion. I unplugged the cable and it then worked fine.
