How can I get the Droid Motorola to tether to my laptop?

Short version is that you can't well at least not "officially". You'll need to use google for the other options.

Actually you can tether to a laptop or pc or Mac with a usb connection through menu. Settings. Wireless/networks. Tethering. Connect, for a small subscription fee.
They say you can not wifi tether the d1, although my other d1 does just fine connecting my laptop.

Froyo on the Droid has the USB Tethering option but from all reports I've seen is that the Verizon phone reps won't enable it as there's supposedly no "official" support. When you try to use it, it pops up a web page with a number to call to add it but the reps claim they can't.

The Motorola Droid 1 is capable, but Verizon won't sell you the tethering plan. You can find 3rd party tethering apps, but use them at your own risk.
