gmail not auto-syncing with motorola droid

I set up gmail fetch because the 'droid was not syncing well with my office email.  For a couple of weeks, this worked like a charm.  Gmail would fetch the email from my office account, and it would sync to my phone, like a good little app should.  I could even REPLY as if it were coming from my office email, not gmail.  Then it suddenly stopped working about a month ago.  First, gmail stopped fetching the office email unless I told it to, AND the gmail and the phone would not sync to retrieve the email unless I did it manually.  The problem with gmail fetch seems to have been corrected in the past week or so.  The problem now remains that the 'droid hardly ever syncs automatically with gmail.  I have to open gmail on the 'droid, open the menu, and "refresh".  Then all the undelivered mail in my gmail account shows up.  Please note:  AUTO-SYNC IS ON, under gmail account settings, and under application background sync.  I have read repeatedly that a user cannot schedule the frequency of sync's, so it's really up to verizon and gmail to decide how often it happens, which at this point is never, unless it's done manually.  I have deleted and re-entered the account.  I have removed the battery and reset the phone.  I don't know if the problem is with gmail or verizon.  On the gmail boards, there are TONS of similar postings, some saying their mail goes undelivered for days if they don't manually refresh.  Anyone know what is going on????

Thank you for the great explanation.  I have the exact same problem.  On top of that, having owned my phone for 3 weeks, it has totally dropped all of my e-mail accounts TWICE except the g-mail account.  I have 4 Days left to give the phone back to Verizon and go back to my Blackberry.  Anybody out there with some help

I would suggest you and the other poster list exactly what programs you have installed on  your Droid.  See if you two have any programs in common that might be causing problems.

In place of that, doing a factory reset would likely get your mail working again, of course you would have to re-install your apps, but everything else should still "be there" when you are done.  (Do a sync of email and contacts first to make sure they are up to date on the Gmail servers.)

Out of curiousity, if you open Gmail and go to menu and lables, you don't show any messages "stuck" in your outbox, do you?

Thanks for your suggestions.  I checked my outbox -- nothing stuck.  I factory-reset the phone, and that *seems* to have done the trick for now, but it is a pain in the neck (I forgot to reset one alarm I had and I missed it) and I hope I don't end up having to do that every other day. You were helpful, and I appreciate your taking the time to respond.

I had the same issue with both of my Gmail accounts a while back. My problem was that GTalk was not running. If it isn't running, apparently it prevents the email from synching.

To check, go to Menu > Settings > Applications > Running Services.

Hellorockview -- WOW!  I can't tell you how many times I went into Running Apps and STOPPED Gtalk from running down my battery.   Nowhere in the manual, or anywhere else I have checked, does it say that GTALK has to be running to sync emails.  The manual says that GTALK is for IM'g -- AND THAT'S IT.  The manual does, however, explain that to conserve battery, STOP RUNNING APPLICATIONS THAT ARE NOT IN USE.    If only they had noted that *GMAIL sync requires GTALK to be running*.   Was this a secret????  How did you find this out -- did someone at Google tell you, or did you figure it out yourself?  I will now keep GTALK running and see if the emails keep syncing.  Thanks a lot for your suggestion.  I hope it works in the long run.

I used to stop it from running all the time too. I never used it so I figured it didn't need to be running. Then when I posted about my sync issues on one of the forums, someone told me that GTalk has to be running in order for it to work properly. Haven't had any problems since!
