I bought a DROID yesterday and the salesperson told me the upgrade to 2.2 would come out August 3.

I heard from a VERY reliable source 2.2 will start rolling out on Aug 3rd hang in there

I''m puzzled. The MOTO page stated froyo is supposedly came out today Aug 2nd but you're saying froyo isn't out until tomorrow Aug 3rd. Can't VZW and MOTO come to an actual release date together? They are partners aren't they i.e buds, compadres, pals in the game. Right. So what's the point of having an OS that's suppose to be universal and  (VZW/MOTO) can't seem to all agree on what to release, what not to release or when to release updates. I thought GOOGLE provides the OS to the handset manufactures and carriers Google released this update back in May and the N1 folks enjoyed it immensely So, how many people did VZW or MOTO assign to the testing that it took them so long to get release 2.2  to the general public. Oh, my bad. It's still not released for  MOTO's DROIDS officially yet. Or is it?  Can someone please enlighten me. Please.

Moto said the week of August 2. They weren't really more specific than that.

Updates are typically rolled out in stages, rather than "en mass", so it is quite possible that some people already have the update (I don't, but that doesn't really mean anything). With 2.1 they did something like 10,000 phones the first night, then 100,000 each night after that until they were all done. Yes, there were places you could download the update if you couldn't wait, but the "first" versions of those were posted by the "tech savy" customers early during the update as the manual update isn't something that I'd recommend for "most" users.

Relax a bit. It's a phone. Smiley Happy

I agree "MOST" user might opt to wait for the OTA but if you have the need and the speed (FIOS internet :smileywink: ) then you should at least be allowed to download it and install it.

{please keep your posts courteous}. As someone already said, "relax, it's just a phone." Verizon is under no obligation to update the operating system or announce in advance when an update will be made.

Does anyone know the status of wi-fi tethering with the official 2.2 update? Verizon's page doesn't mention it:

http://support.vzw.com/pdf/system_update/moto_droid.pdf

although I've read on some forums that those who've rooted thier phones have used it. I'm not up for rooting, I'd like to keep my phone under warranty thank you very much, but I was really looking forward to the tethering feature.

Also, on Verizon's Android support page, it says they don't support tethering:

http://support.vzw.com/faqs/Android/faqs.html

Will this change with Android 2.2? And will Verizon charge for this feature or is it included in our data package?

this is for jimfitzgerald's post above. system would let me post it with his quote

i thought MOTO had the right to update their phones no matter which carrier has the phone right. the carrier either updates the phone or the don't depending on what features best suits them. true, VZW isn't under any obligations to announce anything or do anything but folks don't have to subscribe to VZW and other carriers can use this to they're advantage to lure customers away. so i would think VZW would want to keep up with the SPRINTS, NEXTELS, T-MOBILES if they wish to stay in business. just a thought

The question of whether or not tethering will be allowed by VZW with froyo is an interesting one. We'll probably need to wait until someone who gets the OTA update posts to let us know.

Tethering has been supported by VZW in the past, but only when they could make money from it. Smiley Happy

I think you may want to get your managers permission before replying to customer complaints. "We don't have to so were not going to", is not corporate policy, or they would not be one of the big three. People come on forums to get answers and sometimes to let off steam. I think people are so angry because Verizon "as well the other big cell companies" customer service has went downhill, I would not throw fuel on this fire jimfitzgerald.

I posted this in the Tethering thread but rumor is that tethering in the form of usb tethering or a mobile hotspot will not "officially" be supported on the Droid.

"No Hotspot, No Tethering for Motorola Droid

posted Today, 9:42 AM   by Eric M. Zeman
updated Today, 10:17 AM

Verizon Wireless announced on July 30 that the Motorola Droid would receive the Android 2.2 update starting the week of August 2. Android 2.2 natively supports tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot creation. The Motorola Droid, however, will not offer these features. Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney said to Phone Scoop in an email, "The Droid by Motorola doesn't have [the] hardware to support a Mobile Hotspot. With tethering there is no Connection on the PC side that will allow you to tether the device so the answer is that option isn't part of this update." Raney also said the over-the-air update will be pushed to a small set of users first to make sure it works properly. Once that is confirmed to work, Verizon will begin the general roll-out in phases. Android 2.2 offers a wide range of other improvements, including better security, Flash Player Mobile 10.1, voice dialing via Bluetooth, and improved camera performance."
