How do I prevent Skype mobile from activating? I tried doing the force stop in applications and everytime I turn the phone off and then back on it it starts up again. I do not use the service, and never gave them permission to access information from my phone, but they are doing it any way.

It's not actually doing anything, the os just places it memory for faster startup, that's just how it was setup. Don't worry about it, it's not doing anything, and after a while, when your phone needs the memory for something else, it will close on it's own.
Not doing anything running in background! YEAH RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!! Try killing your battery. Ihave nothing but my android keyboard running and for the past 3 days my battery has died over night because this dumb skype mobile keeps starting on its own. So before you tell someone its not doing anything running in the back ground get your story right!!!!!

If your battery is dying quickly, read this:
http://www.tested.com/news/android-task-killers-are-deadheres-what-you-should-be-doing/923/
If you ABSOLUTELY have to use a task killer, read this:
http://www.androidcentral.com/how-properly-set-and-use-task-killer-oh-yes-i-went-there
I would be willing to bet that you are using an automatic task killer and killing apps willy-nilly, thinking you're making things better so here's one more for you:

I think what they were referring to (shut off data) is just leave WiFi & the GPS stuff turned OFF if not using it.. You'll still receive email and other updates over 3G ... at least that's been my experience. I have a widet to both GPS & WiFi that I toggle when needed; otherwise OFF all day.

that is correct... if you fully shut off all data you won't receive emails, be able to browse internet... etc.. I shut all my data off and this doesn't bother me considering for 8 hours a day at work... my Droid X sits idle anyway....
