Yes. I am using a Radio Shack cable that is about six feet long for charging and data transfer. I believe it is a Gigaware cable.

what do you mean by normal usb extension?  do mean something you can plut into your pc and charge your droid?  if so dont. the output from the usb in a pc/laptop is not enough to charge a droid.  what will actually happen is that your droid will actually discharge.

did you find a longer cable that fits your droid but has a regular usb connector on the other side that you plan plugging into the wall adapter?  it should work.  i use a rocket fish car adapter form my droid and it doesnt cause any problems, so third party cables should not create any problems.

if you plan on getting the multimedia dock then wait on purchasing the longer cable because that device comes with a really long cable (that's what she said! :smileytongue: ) so that might solve your problem.

If you are talking about a true "USB Extension" cable, with a male USB on one end to go into the computer, and a matching femaile of the same type that you can plug your included short USB/micro USB cable into, yes it will work, just like getting a separate longer Micros USB cable will work.  (That woud be my suggestion, vs. a simle extension cable, that way you have a spare calbe to hook up to your PC, and one to plug into the charger.

Remember, charging from your PC will take about 30 or 40% longer than charging from the wall charger, since the maximum output from a computer's USB port is 500mA, and the wall charger is around 850.  Some after-market chargers can supply 1 or even 1.5A, however most of this "excess" current is not utilized by the phone's charging circuit.

I have a sony mp3 player cable that fits into my droid and charges it.  However, the droid cable won't fit into my sony mp3 player.  I compared both cables and they are shaped differently.  Yet, that sony cable fits into my droid.  Also, the pins look a little different.  So I decided not to take any chances and just use the cable that came with my droid.  I don't have the insurance option yet.

If you're concerned about having a long cable then just wound it up and secure it with tape or something.
