It can't be done with stock. But, download Handcent app (great replacement texting app) and you can. You can only do one message at a time though. Tap and hold message and you will see Lock message.

How are you meaning, are you want to back them up to a file to restore from later or are you wanting to have them saved as a readable format... Can you give more information on what you mean because there is a number of apps that can save the files...

I meant how do you lock a text message, there is nothing for that option on the Droid X, on my Droid I could and my son can on the thunderbolt but that option is not available anywhere I looked

Why do you want to lock it, if I can ask? The Droid X has so much memory, you can go without deleting any texts. A friend of mine has had it for a year, texts a LOT, and has never deleted her texts.

Why would anyone want to keep all of their text messages? I have locked a few here and there because I wanted to keep certain ones while deleting the rest. It had nothing to do with memory.

I did the same when I had simple flip phones. I've found that with the Droid X, essentially all your texts are "locked" in that you can save all of them simply by not deleting them. I can see why you would want to save certain ones and delete a whole thread, but I guess I've just never had the need for that.
At any rate, Handcent lets you lock individual texts by long pressing it.
