1. texting ability

2. email access

3. surfing the web

4. pc sync

5. tethering to laptop

thanks for any assistance

Those are minor problems which can be addressed with software updates.

More serious problems on the Droid X is hardware... battery life and the camera doesn't live up to advertised specs.

I would not let others issues stop you from looking at the Droid X, I have had one from day one and I have not had any major issues with my device. I will admit that the 2.2 update isnt perfect but it can be worked through and as for all the areas that you listed in your question, there hasnt been any extreme issues with the areas you are intrested in and I think the device is worth having.  I am happy with my decision to buy Droid X and I believe you may to.  Also remember that all issues that a user have is the device fault, incompatible software can have a level of issues also.  Just something to consider when making decision.

Good luck on making your decision..

+1.

My experience with the X and the 2.2 update have been the same, no problems, oddly enough. I did the hard reset procedure as described by Wildman and others (the procedure that resets the phone, but doesn't allow the previous phone configuration to re-install). The X has been fine ever since.

In addition, some folks that were having problems with their X are now reporting that they had their device replaced with an X that came with 2.2. They report that the replacement phones work much better. Again, I feel that this is due to the phone starting out life with 2.2 and no incompatibilities from apps.

A motorola employee has posted that some issues with 2.2 are being addressed and an update is planned soon. I have not been affected by those issues, at least not yet.

So wanting a Droid X? I say go for it. And enjoy...

I too have had no issues with the Droid X and 2.2. I do not text, so I can not speak about that. However, I do Email using three different accounts and have had no issues. I do scan the net going to several various sites, again with no issues. And I do tether my Droid to my lap top to exchange various files, including pictures and videos, and again, no issues. I do listen to streaming music using Pandora and play a couple of simple games for my simple mind, again no problems. The Droid X is probably one of the best phones out there.

Question mortb,   When you tether your phone to your laptop, do you use the hotspot feature or do you use a USB cable?

I asked in another thread and one of the mods told me to just use the hotspot feature. He said the speed difference was negligable and it was easier to connect.

Thanks,

I've experienced no problems with Froyo on my Droid X after upgrading. The battery life is maybe 20% better and all of the apps that I have used thus far work fine. The only problem I had was getting Froyo in the first place. I got a really good Verizon Tech Support person to walk me through the whole "only sync social networking sites via Wi-Fi" issue. For those that haven't upgraded, this is where if you have social networking set to only update when on Wi-Fi, your phone won't get updates pushed to it. You'll get a message something like" Software update server not available at this time..." I would have never of figured that out on my own...
